With each meal Gila grows more
A biblical beast of ancient lore
With fire in belly, flames in eyes
The beast rise to the highest skies
So beware, ye witches fair
Lest thee be spied by dragon-glare
It’ll show no mercy, it is said
But devour thee and leave thee for dead (woo!)
Gila, Gila, Gila…
Oh is it October? Fudge…
Yeah so um, last year’s Buttkickin’ Halloween Songs started with a bang on October 1st and then… ended. No explanations given, none were asked for, so here it is October 19th 2024 and I’m kickin’ this sucker back up again.
And why? Because I haven’t been feeling Halloween this year at all and quick frankly I’m going to be dragging myself back in while I got a good 12 days left.
So yeah, this is now 12 Days of Buttkickin’ Halloween Songs so
This brings us of course to our “kick-off” tune, and those of you who have stuck around since 2013 alrady know this, we always kick things off with a barnstormer of a tune. And ZOWIE you can’t get more barnstormy than Gila Monster, the lead “single” (I suppose) from King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard and their masterful 2023 thrash metal album PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation Music.
Click that link there to see my thoughts on that record over at my other abandoned blog, but this is epic kaiju/occult/environmentalism allegory at its finest. But here, I’ll plagiarize myself: “Originally hailing from Melbourne Australia, King Gizz is often characterized as genre-defying, and rightfully so. Their sound incorporates elements of rock, including prog, psychedelia, garage, indie, space, folk, fusion, and metal. Often many or all of them at once.”
Anyway Gila Monster is fueled by witchcraft, covens, twisted metal, oil, environmental devastation, a cat that probably knows more than it’s letting on, and of course the titular dragon that has been summoned by our own misguided idiocy to destroy all of humanity once and for all. Witness the dawn of eternal night. It’s here, brah.
This is a pure horror apocalyptic vision, replete with thrash metal trappings, fist pumping choruses, creepy outros, a loving “homage” to 1985 metal that spit in the face of rock conformity and carved its own identity. Kind of like what bands like King Gizz do constantly.
Welcome to the Apocalypse, gang! It won’t end well…
My eyes feel like they’re made of light
Boötes void would be made bright
I will blind you in the hadal zone
Emperor of the abyss below
(Annihilation of planet earth and the beginning of merciless damnation)
Hmm, oh, regret, what a cloud of dread
With the cold hand of death ahead
Oh, desperation, what a mind killer
ALL HAIL KING GILA!
