Buttkickin’ Holiday Songs: “Father Christmas” — The Kinks (1977)

father-christmasI know many of you are shocked…SHOCKED!!!…that I would include a Kinks song in a list of my favorite musical anything. If I were rattling down my list of Top Swahili Yodeling Rodeo Songs, I’m fairly certain I’d find a way to squeeze Ray Davies & Co. in there somehow. Mea maxima culpa. Still though, if you’re looking for something with a driving rock beat to get you into the holiday spirits, Father Christmas definitely deliver.

It’s got it all: crunchy guitars, sleigh bells, a catchy melody, a healthy dose of cynicism and hopefulness, a wry sense of humor, and a Six Million Dollar Man reference. Definitely a go-to song for me around the Holidays, “Father Christmas” is most enjoyable. Daniel Flynn over at ‘The American Spectator’ posted a pretty cool article about the song a few days ago, and I think he sums up the song’s charms rather succinctly. Either way, Xmas Rock doesn’t get much better than this.
