With just a touch of my burning hand
I sent my astro zombies to rape this land
Prime directive, exterminate the whole human race
And your face drops in a pile of flesh
And then your heart, heart pounds ’til it pumps to death
Prime directive, exterminate whatever stands left…
Well gosh!
Look things were getting a little bit esoteric lately, what with ruminations on cosmic unknowns and dystopian futures and what-not. And I love all that mishegas but sometimes you just want a shotgun blast to the face of pure rockin’ Halloween monster mayhem.
So don’t despair, Hokeyfolks. For our next selection, we showcase Astro Zombies by Misfits. A two-minute and fourteen-second blast of pure punk pomposity, this 1982 punk classic satisfies all our uptempo monster movie meanderings. And with gusto!
As far as form and function, there’s not too much to delve into here. Taken from the band’s debut album Walk Among Us, Astro Zombies pounds hard with thrashing rhythms, boundless kinetic intensity, hyperspatial power chords, and Glenn Danzig’s howling vocals paying homage to 1950s doo-wop melodies. This thing is catchy as hell despite itself!
And if we’re talking subject matter? Zombies! From Outer Space! Here to destroy the Earth! Jeepers!
Make any metaphors or ruminate on thematic connective tissue at your own peril. The “Who’d I do this for / Hey, me or you?” certainly can lend interpretations to someone going scorched earth — no pun intended — on someone or someones due to some perceived error on their part. And making them culpable for what he has wrought.
Whatever. It’s a Buttkickin’ Halloween Song. About space zombies. Which is more than enough to merit inclusion.
Astro Zombies, man. Dig it.
All I wanted to say, and all I gotta do
Who’d I do this for? Hey, me or you?
And all I wanted to say, and all I gotta do
Who’d I do this for? Hey, me or you?
