Greetings again to all you fine folk hanging out and about in downtown Hokeyville. Your intrepid narrator is back with a quick rundown of the 2020 Best Damn Race Season, and why we here at HokeyCorp Industries LLC (entirely fictitious) really, truly believe this race series is totally worth your time.
And I’ll tell you, I’m a fan. And yes, I’m an Ambassador, which doesn’t really mean much of everything except (1) the other ambassadors are a ridiculously fun group of ridiculously attractive people who let me hang out with them from time to time, and (2) I get to promote a product I wholeheartedly support.
Also (3) it gives me an excuse to travel throughout Florida, and sometimes outside this fershlugginer state, to race some pretty buttkickin’ races.
But let’s give a recap of WHY I dig Best Damn Race events:
Over the past few years, Best Damn Race has acquired something of a very popular reputation among runners in Florida. Surely with a title as self-aggrandizing as “Best Damn Race”, it surely must offer something beyond the ordinary, correct?
Indeed they do… and what BDR has is an ethos! How many races can lay claim to an ethos? Ethoses are hard to come by these days… and for the record, ‘ethoses’ is street-legal as a plural to ‘ethos’. I could also have gone with ‘ethe’ or ‘ethea’… but those are kind of gauche, really.
But what kind of ethos are we talking here? Their tagline is A Race For Runners, By Runners. Simply put, BDR provides big-ticket race experiences that go toe-to-toe with the big-name races out there, replete with all the swag, bling, and complimentary accouterments, all the while keeping costs at local event prices.
Or to quote the website:
Best Damn Race ® is a running series created for runners by runners. Our goal is to provide a big race experience at a local race price. It doesn’t matter if you are an elite runner, first timer, walker, or using a baby jogger, we want you to have the best DAMN race experience.
Our unique registration process allows all participants the opportunity to register for as little as $1. This gives all athletes an opportunity to race regardless of income level. For example, each non-challenge race starts out with $1 (for the first 10 participants to register), $5 (for participants 11-20), $10 (for participants 21-30), $15 (for participants 31-40).
Amenities & Bling! Our philosophy is “RUN, EAT, DRINK, PARTY”
Sounds pretty nifty, right? Furthermore, your humble host has run five Best Damn Race events (all times, fully paid for by myself and myself only; as a Race Ambassador I preach the good word but also pay my own way, so I’m giving you the real deal here) and had a great time with all of them.
- 2015 Best Damn Race Orlando Half Marathon
- 2016 Best Damn Race Safety Harbor Half Marathon
- 2016 Best Damn Race Cape Coral Half Marathon
- 2017 Best Damn Race Safety Harbor Half Marathon
- 2017 Best Damn Race Orlando Half Marathon
- 2019 Best Damn Race Jacksonville Half Marathon
- 2019 Best Damn Race Orlando Half Marathon
I think I felt pretty goshdarn triumphant at the end of the Orlando race:
But I felt really awesome at the end of Safety Harbor. Not I only did I PR that race, I managed to finish my first (and as of this writing, only) sub-2-hour half!
In 2017 I even ran my third fastest half at the Best Damn Race Orlando Half Marathon:
Dig that Rush 2112 race shirt…The Best Damn Races are fun as hell, but they are also really inexpensive compared to other races of similar scale and scope. If you’re early enough, you can get in for $1, $5, $10, or $20. Even if those fill up fast, most times you can get in for around the $50 mark. Think of that: fifty bucks not only gets you a bib, but a really well-designed, world-class race medal, a tech t-shirt (no cotton here!), free food, beer, and massages after the race, and FREE RACE PHOTOS at the Finish Line. Plus a post-race party atmosphere, including that PR bell which could have your name on it.
Best Damn Race features 5Ks, 10Ks, 5K+10K Challenges, and Half Marathons, as well as incentives that offer bonus bling for return participants.
So here’s what this means for you:
